Awards

We wish we could tell you exactly how many awards Børge Ring has won in his career. As some of you may know, the house of Børge and Joanika burnt down in February 2012 and all their worldly possessions were lost. This means that any artwork by Børge and Joanika left in this world, is very very rare and from that moment on became a collector’s item.

We know that at that time he had won 36 awards. It also means we don’t exactly have the details about all of the awards, as they – including the Oscar® statue that was placed on the dinner table – melted and burned. We did find the remnants in the ashes. Børge recently said: “A molten Oscar looks like an omelet run over by a truck…”.

Winsor McCay – 2012
Børge received the Winsor McCay award at the 39th edition of the Annie Awards, in February 2012. His daughter Anne-Mieke went to collect it for him.
Børge Ring Award – 2012
In 2012 ANIS introduced the Børge Ring Award at the prestigious Odense Film Festival. The first edition was won by Svilen Dimitrov with Rew Day. In the photo Børge’s daughter Anne-Mieke holds the Special Lifetime Achievement Award Børge received at the same time.
Oscar® Qualification (2015)
As of 2015, winning the Børge Ring Award means immediate qualification for the Oscar®.
Unicef Children’s Award (2000)

In 2000 Børge won the Unicef Children’s Award for “Run Of The Mill”. As stated on the Unicef website:

“Roy Disney presented the UNICEF Award, given to an animated film which highlights children’s rights, at the International Animation Festival in Annecy, France, on 10 June. Borge Ring of Denmark won it for Run of the Mill, a nine minute film about children and the dangers of drug addiction. Ms. Ring is an Oscar-winning animator who has combined elements of classical animation with a poetic-musical style of drawing.”

The Oscar (1985)

In 1985 “Anna & Bella” was awarded with an Oscar®. This amazing photo of Børge and the Oscar statue was taken by Jan van den Nieuwenhuijzen.

Other Awards

2003 – Ridder in de orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. This is a royal award by the – at that time – Dutch Queen Beatrix. Translated it means: “Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion”. It’s a very special recognition.

1978 – Cannes – Prix de Jury.

Many more

Like we wrote at the top of this page, we would like to hear from anyone who knows about the other 30 or more awards Børge won.
